Tim (Zi Yu) Wang is a musician, researcher, and student innovator from Shanghai. Raised in Shanghai and later moving to the United States for boarding school, he developed a cross-cultural perspective that strengthened his commitment to both the arts and scientific inquiry.
His primary instrument is the alto saxophone, although he began on the piano at a young age and continues to play keyboard. In middle school, Tim expanded into other woodwinds, frequently doubling on the tenor and baritone saxophone, and more recently adding clarinet and flute. Tim’s saxophone coach at Deerfield Mr. Bruce Krasin has noted that he’ll soon be ready to “play [in] a Broadway Show.”
At Deerfield, Tim co-leads CoDA, the school’s oldest student-run pop, jazz, and rock band. He hosts weekly rehearsals, prepares arrangements, and coordinates performances for students and official school events, including seasonal concerts and All-School Meetings with audiences of 600+.
Tim’s exploration of music goes beyond frequent performances. He has explored machine-learning approaches to watermark AI-generated music in support of intellectual property, including conversations with industry and academia professionals.
Beyond creating music, Tim is interested in building tools that utilize AI and engineering to amplify human health, especially projects that have measurable and real-world impacts. (Explore his projects, performances, and other work throughout the site.)
